Part1: Vigan-Laoag-Pagudpud Day1 - Sleeper Bus Experience and Arrival in Vigan City

After few weeks of planning day and night, seeing the beauty and heritage of Ilocos Region was a blast!

Transportation To and From Vigan City, Ilocos Sur

How to reach Vigan? Located in the northwestern part of Luzon, it can be reached by land or by plane.

By Air
Mindoro Airport is the only airport in Vigan City.  As of now, Southeast Airlines (seair) caters services to and from Vigan. Another option is from Laoag International Airport which is almost 2 hours drive from Vigan. Cebu Pacific, Air Philippines, Sky Pasada, and China Southern Airlines fly to and from Laoag airport.

By Land
Getting here by bus will take you more or less 8 hours of travel coming from Manila.  Bus lines I know are Partas, Dominion Bus lines, Maria De Leon, FariƱas Transit and Viron Transit.   Buses going to Laoag from Manila is also possible. Meanwhile if you're coming from Laoag, there are ordinary buses from Laoag to Vigan or Partas' aircon bus from Laoag.

The Sleeper's Bus Experience via GV Florida Bus

Our plan was to take a bus to Vigan and take the plane from Laoag back to Manila.  Getting a plane back and forth is not feasible for me since we only have three days to explore everything.  Note that Laoag is 2 hours from Vigan so time must be well spent.  Though, I don't want to stress my friends from having a long bus ride, that lead us riding a sleeper's bus.

Kim once told, "Pwede bang gising sa sleeper bus?"

It's my first time riding a sleeper's bus, and I'm so excited! GV Florida bus in Sampaloc have a 10pm ride everyday bound to Laoag.  Tickets cane be bought in advance 2 days before your trip inwhich I did because I don't want to mess up the plan if it will be fully booked hehe.  This is a 35 sleeping bed capacity (double-deck), non-stop aircon bus with a portable toilet room. I was able to sleep here and you can recline your back for up to approximately 60 degrees.

TIP: The bus is made up of double-decks so may I suggest to choose the ground-level deck to make yourself comfortable going to the toilet room.

Arrival in Vigan

6 Hours travel time! Yes, could you believe that?  We left Sampaloc, Manila at 10PM and I'm expecting to arrive in Vigan around 6am.  It is bound to Laoag so the bus will be dropping us off just outside the Vigan City proper. I'm still half asleep when the driver shouted "Bantay na! Bantay!" My friends were clueless, thank God I woke up and heard it, "Ay dito na tayo, baba na!" (We're here already)  It was too dark, time check: 4am! There are tricycles around and told them where to go.  They charged us Php 80 per tricycle.

Where We Stay - Casa Teofila Lodge

Casa Teofila Lodge is not within the heritage village.  It is located in Pantay Daya, Ilocos Sur and this is not a heritage house.  But why did I choose this?  It is cheaper from the heritage hotels (we're on a budget), some of us are afraid to sleep on old houses, and the most important thing is that they allowed us to check in at a very early time without any charge for as long as no one's occupying the room.  And besides, we only need a place to sleep as we'll be outside most of the time. Anyway, I'll be creating another post for a list of Vigan Hotels to help you with your stay here.

We were able to check in at 4am, rest for a while as this is a long long day to go!

hi, i scared in sleeping at old houses too. so it's not scary at casa teofila? original plan is too tour vigan then travel to laoag and stay there for the night since i'm scared nga of old houses but upon reading your blog (actually after reading it 3x hehe - so helpful). I've considered to sleep at vigan...question is: was is scary? if not, how much then if we're just two. appreciate so much. it's gonna be our anniv on feb and we're going

JAMIE

adventurousfeet said...

Hi Jaime,

casa teofila is a typical lodge with plain rooms for daily rent. So definitely it's not scary, the pics above are taken from Casa teofila as you can see there are no signs of heritage feel/ antiques. Please call them for the rates (better to call their landline for clear transaction). :)

happy anniv!

Hi adventurousfeet!! we're planning to go to Ilocos by plane (3D2N Trip)..From Laoag, how should we tour Ilocos? I mean, after our tour in Laoag, where should we go next? Vigan or Pagudpud? we will arrive in Laoag by night..around 8pm..

Nice blog..very helpful and detailed.. thanks in advance!!!Ɯ

siRk

adventurousfeet said...

Hi sirk!

If you want to bring home a lot of pasalubongs for your family, go to pagudpud first then Vigan last. If you want a beach for your last stop, go to Vigan first then Pagudpud.

Pagudpud and vigan are almost same travel time(1.5-2hrs) from Laoag.

Make sure to manage your time well.
Choose the spots you really want to go so you can prioritize them if in case you don't have enough time to visit all places.

Doms said...

I hope it's ok to post this sample itinerary for a 4days/3nights trip in ilocos, just to help those who are planning to visit, what and where to go. I've been inviting my friends/officemates to visit ilocos for them to see what ilocos can offer. if it's not ok to post this, just delete this post. thanks.

btw, i'm from ilocos norte but currently working here in mnla. you also have to add to your budget your hotel accommodation if you have nowhere to stay in laoag. it was not included in the budget since we normally stay in our house in laoag city, ilocos norte before going to pagudpud... and yes, we are able to go to all the places mentioned on the 1st itinerary for 4 days/3 nights when i invited my teammates for a team building, but we were very very exhausted after that but so far all of my officemates enjoyed it! lol... if you're just planning to go to pagudpud and vigan then you can just skip the other tourist spots but make sure to visit the ff:

► PAOAY ■ Paoay Church
► BURGOS ■ Burgos Lighthouse ■ Kapurpurawan - Rock Formation
► BANGUI ■ Bangui Windmills
► PAGUDPUD ■ Patapat Viaduct ■ Paraiso ni Anton ■ Bagong Lipunan ■ Agua Grande ■ Timmangtang Rock ■ Bantay Abot Cave ■ Maira-Ira (Blue Lagoon) ■ Kaibigan Falls
► VIGAN CITY ■ Heritage Village ■ Vigan Pottery ■ Hidden Garden ■ Baluarte

We're scheduled to go to Ilocos after the holy week and decides to follow this itinerary, however we will not be taking a plane going back to Manila. Would it also work if we go to Laoag first then Vigan? I also observed that u didnt spend much time in pagudpod beach since you arrived there night time and left early morning for the tour. Im just afraid that we may not have enough time to enjoy the beach considering that we would only take a bus going home. Plus i cant find any information online as to what time the buses depart from Laoag to Manila. Hope you could help. :) God Bless you and Looking forwar to your future travel blogs. :)

i think my reply is too late. anyway its best to just choose the places you want to see, based on what you saw on my blog so you could have enough time to explore and swim at the beach. Im sorry i haven't created manila-laoag bus schedule trips, someday I might do and post it here. But its best to call the bus company regarding your questions :)

Anonymous said...

Good day! I just want to know since you posted that travelling time from laoag-vigan or laoag-pagudpud is 1.5-2hrs, are you preferring a van rented or is there a public transpo we can ride to?

yes there are public buses you can ride - laoag-vigan or laoag-pagudpud

hi! is it really safe to take a sleeper bus? how was the trip going there? my friends and i are a bit hesitant taking a sleeper bus. how was the bus trip over all? were really concerned about how safe it is.. looking forward to your reply.

adventurousfeet said...

that's the only number i got :( maybe you can try other places to stay

adventurousfeet said...

safe in what way? if you're concern on the baggages, our bags were with us all the time. if you're concern on the ride, i didn't felt a bit in danger during our ride, typical bus ride, only that it is non-stop. I actually fell asleep. If you don't like in a sitting position during a long ride maybe you should give this a chance. I guess the downside here is that the seat is somehow not design for overweight people, maybe they could find the seats uncomfortably smaller. Please check the picture for reference. Hope that helps in your decision making. :) You may want to contact florida bus. I think they also have non stop ac bus, not a sleeper one. :)

may windows, di nga lang yata pwede buksan. siguro kung maihiin ka hassle pag sa taas kaya sa baba nalang ang piliin mo. Kung mauna kang bumili ng ticket mauuna ka din mamili ng pwesto. :) Just make sure to ask conductor and driver to wake you up :)

hi!m so glad i found your your blog. m planning to travel alone Vigan-Laoag on March 2013 pa naman. I actually made reservations na as early as now. may mahire kayang trike na puwedeng maglibot sa Pagudpod and other places in Laoag?magkano?

I'm planning to stay din sa Casa Teofila Lodge and contacted WowTravel Agency for the room availability and rates. Excited na rin ako for the Sleeper's Bus.

Anonymous said...

hi adventuroust feet, ask ko lang sana kung ano yung bagong cp number ng Casa Teofila. plan kasi namin pumunta sa november 30. magpap-book sana ako kaso mukhang disable na yung cp# nila na nakalgay.

adventurousfeet said...

natry nyo po sa landline? tawagan nyo po ang landline, ganyan po kasi ginawa ko since di ko rin makontak ang mga posted cp number sa ibang sites before ng trip ko. then during my reservation thru phone hiningi ko na contact cp number nila.

adventurousfeet said...

sa pagudpud yes po! may fixed price ang mga trike to tour around. Sobrang mababait po ang mga tao sa pagudpud. :) Sa laoag i think meron din within sa city. If sa malalayong spots of laoag, baka mas mahal lang ang charge, just beware kasi some tricycle sa laoag and vigan may pagkamagulang (based on my experience po ha hehe di naman nilalahat, baka may mang-away sakin )

hi adventourist feet, ask ko lang kung may mga tricycle driver na pwede mag tour? kung meron how much kaya usually? thanks thanks!

Hi there adventurous feet! I really owe you our great trip in Ilocos last week. I have been reviewing your blog early in July and we even follow most of your itineraries. Medyo hindi lang nasunod yung iba kasi bumabagyo when we went there last week. But super enjoy and super ganda ng Ilocos. Thanks sa blog mo kasi laking tulong talaga. Naprepare namin most of our budgets and the places nagkaroon kami ng mga ideas on where to go. So thank you so much and continue to inspire and help others. Amazing content! Vigan is one of the most interesting and historic places to visit in the Philippines. You can really see the remnants of Philippines' colonial past in this city.
